This bugs the hell out of me. I constantly encounter the terminology of Alpha/Beta, most commonly men calling themselves or other men Alpha Males.

The truth is that terminology comes from Ethology, which is the study of animal behaviour. The study of human behaviour is called Psychology. The concept of dominance hierarchy (the Alpha/Beta/Omega etc paradigm is known as "Dominance Hierarchy" in Ethology) does not exist in psychology, for a multitude of reasons, not least that human behaviour is actually infinitely more complicated than almost any other species you care to mention and has never leant itself to simple categorisation of the kind represented by dominance hierarchy, in fact it is so complicated that even current psychological knowledge can only claim a partial and largely theoretical understanding of it.

When a man calls himself an Alpha or an Alpha Male, what he is essentially saying is that he and by extension all human beings are about as complex and subtle as a Lemur or Dog. Human beings are considerably more complicated (in behavioural terms, especially in terms of sexual behaviour) and much more intelligent than a Lemur or a Dog. Or he is saying that he is too stupid to know the difference between concepts involved in Ethology and an actual understanding of Psychology.

One crucial aspect of human dominance (and dominance is expressed in myriad ways in human behaviour, it's the reason we have Social Hierarchy [note the difference, Social Hierarchy is a much more complicated concept than Dominance Hierarchy]) is our ability to use our considerable intelligence and ability to understand complicated abstract concepts which make us adept at navigating the highly fluid dynamics of human social hierarchy.

If a man indicates clearly that he is ignorant (i.e. he believes there is such a thing as a human "Alpha Male" and that he is one) and proudly compares himself to a lower primate or less intelligent mammal, he may well still be cunning and manipulative and therefore quite good at posing at dominance, but he is technically not a human being capable of true, effective dominance.

If you find dominance and submission sexually arousing then it's worth thinking about this next time you're trying to assess the character of a man. We're accustomed to thinking in terms of looking beyond appearances, in as much as it's not uncommon to meet men who are huge, muscled and tattooed and discover they're submissive. But I think the deeper matter of looking at how a man thinks about himself and his level of intelligence, is often overlooked. Just don't be fooled by fakes Subs, men who call themselves "Alphas" are nothing of the sort (since they're not Chimpanzees) and usually not really naturally dominant since they lack the most important human skill needed to be dominant.

I'm reblogging this again (and adding new content) because the term "Alpha Male" seems to be gaining traction on tumblr once again and this myth needs to be exploded.

The whole concept of the Alpha Male comes from studies of wolf behaviour which were done in the 1940s. The scientist who coined the term now completely repudiates it and all of the assumptions surrounding it because those studies were done on captive wolves and not on wolves in the wild. So even the ethological view of this terminology has completely changed let alone that the terms WERE NEVER APPLICABLE TO HUMAN BEHAVIOUR IN THE FIRST PLACE, AND SEEKING TO FORCE HUMAN BEINGS INTO THIS TERMINOLOGY IS FUCKING STUPID.
